Billy Connolly: Was it something I said?

My Mum loves Billy Connolly and I’ll bet yours does too. But the first 15 minutes of Was It Something I Said, the Scotsman’s new stand-up show, will have them stunned to silence.

An early swipe at Christians quickly becomes a dig at suicide bombers and, before you know it, Connolly’s telling religion to “f*ck off” for good. “You’ve had 2,000 years and you’ve f*cked it,” he says “Now f*ck off”. Great stuff.

But soon we’re right back in Mum territory. He first offers a little advice – explaining why it’s fruitless arguing with women – before moaning about the amount of products in his wife’s side of the bathroom cabinet. Mum would’ve laughed, but it’s not funny. But it’s not long ‘til Connolly’s back on the good stuff, talking about a new game he’s invented (p*ss hockey), political correctness and a God called Percy.

Billy Connolly is operating in a brave new world of stand-up, a world dominated by the likes of Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr, but he’s still raking in the punters. Was It Something I Said is not the big man’s masterpiece, but it’s a tried and tested formula and it works. My Mum loves it anyway.
