Incoming: Kate Lucas is ruining the NHS
Andrew Mickel5 August 2013
Musical comedian Kate Lucas lets us know what to expect at the Lunchtime Special...
The lunchtime comedy showcase schedule is increasingly packed, but our eye was caught by the line-up at The Tron for Lunchtime Special. We've heard from a few of the people involved - and you can see them live at 12.30pm throughout the Fringe (apart from the 13th, OBVS).
What brought you into comedy?
I signed up to the comic performance module at Middlesex Uni because I couldn't imagine anything more terrifying and I thought if I could face that I'd be less scared of everything else.
Describe your act in five words.
Nice, friendly, foul, twisted, disgusting.
What's been the best reaction you've had to your comedy?
In a pause during one of my songs a woman around 70 years old slowly shouted the words "No! Nasty. Wrong". The most succinct and favourite review I'll ever have.
Who's your biggest fan?
My sister I think. Outside of my family it's probably a woman named Christine I met at a gig. She's a counsellor for Amersham and used her power to pretty much force a promoter in amersham to give me a gig.
What's the toughest lesson you've learnt in comedy?
That there will never come a time when you are too good to be shit. It's the most humbling of all performance arts I think because everyone dies once in a while. You have to just strive to be less shit less often.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
"Fuck it!" - my mother. It's the only pep talk that always works and never fails to get things into perspective.
What is your guilty comedy pleasure?
I fall asleep to sitcoms so i have every sitcom ever made. I have a shocking peice of cheese called just good friends that my mum recorded for me.
Which other acts have you seen while gigging you recommend?
Tom Allen is amazing. Bobby Mair. Thunderbards. Tez Ilyas, Harriet Kemsley, Gary Tro!
What's the day job?
Booking people's hospital appointments for the NHS/single-handedly ruining the NHS. That's a lie. Harriet Kemsley works with me. We team up.
