Melbourne's (joint) best newcomer answers our questions. WARNING: contains Adam Sandler.
While most of comedy has naffed off to Edinburgh for August, the Soho Theatre is playing host to both of the Melbourne Best Newcomer Award winners from this year – Matt Okine and Ronny Chieng.
We sent Ronny some questions, ahead of him landing in London for the first time – but first of all, let's see him in action:
What brought you into comedy?
It was something I always wanted to try out, and I had a feeling inside that it was something I could do so when the opportunity arose to try it out I gave it a shot.
Describe your act in five words.
Multi-national, observational, absurdist, Olympics.
What's been the best reaction you've had to your comedy?
People laughing so hard they got pregnant.
Who's your biggest fan?
I'd like to know as well! If you are reading this, can my biggest fan please email me at http://www.ronnychieng.com/email-me thanks!
What's the toughest lesson you've learnt in comedy?
The show must go on. Even if you are bombing.
What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Being professional means acknowledging that something went wrong, but not getting debilitatingly emotional about it.
Show us something fascinating on the internet about you. (That isn't your website/Twitter/'similar'.)
There is another Ronny Chieng from Malaysia who is the same age as me whom I have been battling my entire life for my internet identity ever since we both signed up for ICQ in 1995.
What is your guilty comedy pleasure?
I love Adam Sandler's You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
Which other acts have you seen while gigging you recommend?
I highly recommend fellow Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2012 Best Newcomer Award winner Matt Okine's show Being Black & Chicken & S#%t at the SOHO Theatre 13 - 25 Aug. It is emotional and very funny at the same time.
What's the day job?
I was working as a lawyer for a while but now I just send and reply to emails. I am a professional email user (not to be confused with an email spammer).
Ronny is at the Soho Theatre from Monday 13 August to Saturday 25 August, at 9.15pm. Tickets are over here.
