Gráinne Maguire takes a stroll through the Grassmarket in Edinburgh for the afternoon in the latest installment to our comedy guide to the Scottish capital....
My favourite place in Edinburgh is the Grassmarket. Firstly it looks like I’m in Harry Potter, which is a big tick already for me. Will I buy a second hand book or a wizard’s wand? The possibilities seem endless. Secondly, there is a Christmas decoration shop there open all year round that fills your heart with wonder. What would it be like to work in such a place?
The place feels like stepping into a foreign village; there is a wine merchant and a whiskey shop and a place that just sells cheese.
Then there are the vintage shops. I lose my mind in vintage shops in Edinburgh. The combination of having extra time on my hands and the enthusiasm that being away from home brings, I always get my head completely turned and decide from now on I want to wear pre-war tea dresses. Then there are the little coffee shops.
There is no better place in the entire world than a coffee shop, in Edinburgh reading a newspaper, eating a caramel biscuit slice reading a newspaper. I always feel like I’m in some classic old film but then mid festival I am usually dressed like an extra for Last of The Summer Wine on crack so that might explain things.
Gráinne Maguire will be performing Where are all the fun places and are lots of people there having better fun? at the Udderbelly – Daisy, 1st August – 26th August, 4.20pm. For tickets see: www.edinburghsbestcomedy.com
