Secret Edinburgh: Rob Beckett eats all the pies

Rob Beckett's dazzling white gnashers get put to work at the Pie Maker...

It’s not really that secret but it is still one of my favourite places to visit when I need to cheer myself up when it is all cold and wet, so basically all the time in Edinburgh. Pie Maker on Nicholson Street is the Ronseal of the bakery industry. Their branding is straight to the point with no messing around; they make pies and they make them very well.

During my first Edinburgh I did a package show with a few other comics, including Tom Rosenthal to whom I am eternally grateful for he introduced me to Pie Maker. He would come in nearly every day with a pie for breakfast, which I thought was just plain weird until one day I was so curious to see what the big deal was that I had one too and became a pie-for-breakfast man myself. Along with pies they also knock out a full range of other savoury snacks which I enjoy at all times of the day: remember Pie maker is for life, not just for breakfast.

Just don’t eat a sausage roll whilst walking in the rain, though; trying to get soggy pastry out of clothing is an absolute nightmare.

Rob Beckett’s Summer Holiday is at the Pleasance Courtyward from 1-27 August, 18:00. More info at the Ed Fringe site here
