Edinburgh Fringe review: John Robins |

|---|---|---|---|---|
As sources of stand-up material go, messy, heart wrenching break-ups aren't that popular. Nevertheless, young Bristolian newcomer John Robins has turned the past nine months of wet cheeks and sleepless nights into a surprisingly funny and genuinely charming set after he broke up with "the one" last December. Full of frank truths and candid tales of humiliation and embarrassment, Robins confidently laughs his way out of his emotional black hole, giving his audience plenty to laugh about, despite the seemingly self-indulgent (and a touch depressing) topic. Occasionally pausing to sip some 'joke juice' (Cider to you and me) John is perfectly happy telling his sorry tale, a master of the self-deprecation shtick. But what's so pervasively appealing about Robins, on top of his easy-going attitude, is his sheer frankness: pushing his hands through his hair and rubbing his brow, he cathartically describes almost picking up a prostitute in a Staples car park (by accident) and his nigh-on obsession with mopey ballad "Nothing Compares 2 U" post split. Despite the moody topic, there's definitely potential for a more, traditional set in there, a bit down the line. Though 'Skinny Love' (Yep, named after the Bon Iver track) is somewhat hampered by its subject matter, after winning plaudits from the likes of The Leicester Comedy Festival (winning the "Best Debut Show" award), it's only a matter of time before John gets bigger and better, and, chances are, surrounded by hordes of new potential girlfriends.
