He may have spent most of his time recently heading through the Yorkshire Dales with Rob Brydon playing an alter-ego version of himself in The Trip, but it is Steve Coogan’s resurrection of his famous character Alan Partridge that has grabbed the headlines after being nominated for a South Bank Award.

Filmed in partnership with Fosters beer, the 12-part online series based on the fictional Norwich radio DJ have beaten a plethora of traditional TV sitcoms to gain a place on the comedy category. The series is the first dedicated web series to be nominated for the award.

Other nominations vying for the prize include Getting On, starring Jo Brand and Joanna Scanlan, and the BBC’s Rev, which stars Tom Hollander.

Other notable nominations include E4’s Misfits going up against the BBC’s Sherlock and Channel 4’s This is England in the TV category.

South Bank Award host Melvyn Bragg said: "The shortlist demonstrates the extraordinary wealth of achievement across the arts in the UK.

"It is fantastic to see the arts flourishing - and there has certainly never been a more important moment to celebrate the breadth and range of talent across the country. We are delighted that we can continue to honour the dedication of these artists."

The South Bank Awards are set to be held at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday 25 January and will be screened on the Sky Arts channel.
