Ross Noble runs riot at Latitude with 3,000 strong conga to vegan stall
Ross Noble literally ran away with the comedy tent at Latitude on Friday after hatching a plan to conga his way around the site to a vegan stall to shout 'Sausage Rolls!!' with his 3,000 strong crowd.
Latitude’s comedy tent had already played host to the wit of Russell Howard and Robin Ince before Noble took to the stage.
The Geordie comic is known as a master of spontaneous stand-up and it wasn’t long before he deviated from the usual comic path and onto one of his trademark tangents.
Putting health and safety firmly out of the question, Noble grabbed one of the foam plinths that had been placed to give the tent a Greek air to say: “What the Fuck are these?
“That’s the most unnecessary stage adornment I have ever seen,” before trying to jump on it and use it as a platform.
It seemed the right response to what had been deemed, the ‘poshest’ festival on earth. No sooner had the illusion of being on a Greek stage been wrecked he’d found a fridge full of red-bull and dragged it to the front for an energy drink free-for-all.
Not content with causing havoc at the front Noble then gets some punter to run to the back of the tent with another cage of red-bulls to see if he can make it.
It became apparent that he wasn’t here to do sketch, he was determined to take the stage apart, and use the crowd to help him do it.
Leading the tent through a sing-along to Queen’s We Will Rock You, Noble hatched a plan to lead a massive conga line through the festival to cause havoc at a local vegan shop.
“You know what we could do? We could, all conga to the shop and then storm the stage for Franz Ferdinand. It’ll be like Nuremburg with conga,” he said.
Choosing another Queen tune - this time Bohemian Rhapsody - as his build up song, Noble got to work as conductor. “If I conga off and only four of you join I’m going to look like a right cock” the comic quipped.
He needn’t have worried. Standing on the foam plinths to orate a 3,000 strong crowd with possibly worst cover version ever Noble vaulted barrier rock’n’roll style before running the length of the festival site with the comedy tent emptying behind him.
The resulting pandemonium saw thousands running amok across the artists arena with Noble at the front, pointing the way to the Vegan stall on his quest to bemuse a bunch of vegans with the adopted shout ‘Sausage Rolls’.before enjoying a triumphant crowd surf and spending at least half an hour chatting with fans.
At times it was as if Noble wasn't leading the crowd, he was responding to random requests to dance on a plinth (and fall off dramatically) or run to a pie and mash shop. At one point he even questions himself, asking, ‘is this actually entertainment?’
It is, but not the pre-prepared routine that many expected to see.
If anything it was better. For more than a day people were recollecting the highlights of his impromtu festival set and their chance to grab Noble’s shoes, or how they ran all the way to the vegan stall to shout about pastry products.
