The Underbelly is set to extend its stay on London’s Southbank next summer as part of a move to capitalise on the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Underbelly have joined forces with the South Bank Centre to extend both the size and scope of the Underbelly Pasture, adding a Spiegeltent to the area which will stay for the duration of the summer – even including the Edinburgh Fringe in August – to capitalise on the increased tourist revenue.

The new area, which has been named The London Wonderground, will setup camp on the Southbank from May 8 to September 30th.

Tim Minchin has been signed up to headline the Underbelly tent on July 8, with Greg Proops, Rufus Hound, Gina Yashere, Richard Herring and The Boy with Tape on his Face also on the bill.

Alongside the Underbelly (which will move up to Edinburgh in late July) the new Spiegeltent will offer a more cabaret-style programme of events, with dance, music and even burlesque muted as part of the performances which would be programmed.

The Underbelly are the first major Edinburgh venue to host a more permanent venue in London to capitalise on the Olympics, and the move may herald the first signs that the Fringe could suffer from the weight of sporting and cultural events elsewhere next summer.

The new Wonderland area is also expected to be designed as a summer destination for the public to maximise the income from drinks and beverages during the long summer evenings.

Wonderland also clashes with the other major comedy event in September, the Greenwich Comedy Festival, which usually runs on the first week of the month.

Ed Bartlam and Charlie Wood, directors of Underbelly said in a press statement: "We're delighted to be working with Southbank Centre to create The London Wonderground, which we believe will capture all the sights, sounds and smells of the carnival.

"We’re putting a little of the spirit of Coney Island in its heyday into London and we can’t wait! We’re also pleased to be returning to Southbank Centre with our big purple cow, Udderbelly. This will be her fourth year grazing in the capital and our programme of shows will be bigger and better than ever."
