Harry Hill's TV Burp

Despite a duff song and one hit-and-miss sketch, Harry Hill's ITV vehicle is ticking along nicely

Harry Hill has never worried about what's cool in comedy. He made his name in the 90s with a silly, cosy Channel 4 TV show and now his career is peaking on ITV1 Saturday prime time.

Now in its sixth series, TV Burp has become the perfect vehicle for Hill's comedic tools of absurdity and gentle mockery.

The show's strength lies in Hill's performance and his writers' eye for detail. You can't help but be won over by a gag when you know they've trawled through three hours of Emmerdale for one throwaway clip. The usual suspects are taken apart – Freaky Eaters, Australian Princess, Coronation Street – with Hill's typical mix of affection and exasperation at the state of TV.

If the show in anyway fails it's due to a lack of pace. Hill has an infuriating habit of moving away from perfect one-liners and towards longer, weaker sketches or songs and TV Burp is no different. While it may be necessary to break up the gags and change the pace it is always a disappointment when Hill leaves the clips for a pre-filmed sketch or knowingly-bad song. But that's a little niggle in what is the best show on TV at the moment.
