Hot Fuzz

Shaun of the Dead team keep standards high with their genre-melding second film

Self-referential writer-director team Pegg and Wright are back with their second feature film in three years, and it won't disappoint. Their previous offering, Shaun of the Dead, won acclaim for its mash-up of zombie flick and rom-com. Hot Fuzz exploits the same genre-splicing formula; serving up what can best be described as a cross between Midsomer Murders and Robocop.

The setting has relocated from Pegg and Wright's north London stomping ground to an idyllic West Country village, but thankfully none of the subtle observations of English life are lost. And while the fast-cut directorial style is as effective as ever, the finished product somehow lacks the effortless fun of Shaun of the Dead. Perhaps this is due to a clunkier plot and a hybrid of genres which isn't quite as easy on the eye.

Alongside a strong supporting cast which includes Timothy Dalton (always better on the side of villainy) and Jim Broadbent, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost retain the same comfortable chemistry. There's the usual splurge of Hollywood references throughout, from Crocodile Dundee to Bad Boys II to Scream, but the resulting melange remains as English as rhubarb crumble.
