A poignant take on the alienation of city life from this award-winning comedy duo
Created by Chris Branch and 2005 Perrier winner Will Adamsdale, The Receipt delivers hilariously acute perceptions of everyday city life, from over-complicated coffee bars to media dictatorship.
Set in the fictional city of Glinton, Adamsdale plays office-worker Wylie, a drone with no real grasp of his role at an anonymous corporate enterprise. He finds meaning amid the swipe-card culture when he embarks on a search for the owner of a receipt he finds on the street.
Branch skilfully manipulates a couple of filing cabinets and a synthesiser to create sound effects that offer a bounce-board for Adamsdale's incisive humour. Through their bizarre play on common daily frustrations and familiar absurdities, Branch and Adamdale have taken observational comedy to the highest level.
The show poses questions about what really matters in life and, without
providing easy answers, speaks to a common desire to step off the treadmill
of modern living. It's a poignant look at the loneliness that, sooner or
later, imprisons all city dwellers.
