Shunned comic steps in to pick up partner’s prize
There were few surprises in the main categories at the BAFTA awards on Sunday. The Royle Family claimed the best sitcom gong, That Mitchell and Webb Look was voted best comedy programme, Life on Mars won the ‘audience award’. And enunciatively-challenged Jonathon Ross took the prize for best entertainment performance.
One small upset was ITV2’s Hollywood-based comedy Entourage winning the international category, beating off stiff competition from the heavily-marketed Lost and House.
But in a bizarre twist of fate, it was the lanky Stephen Merchant, nominated against Extras co-star Ricky Gervais, who stood up to claim the prize for best comedy performance.
It was actually Gervais who won, but in his absence Merchant was asked to collect the award.
"Talk about rubbing salt into the wound," he deadpanned. "I'm sure he would like me to say I've been robbed, and I would agree. It's not like he hasn't got enough already."
