BBC Signs Deal with YouTube

Beeb Tube: Auntie gets her clips out

The BBC have signed a deal with video-sharing website YouTube which will see clips of its popular comedy shows broadcast via the site.

Beeb-branded YouTube clips already available include musings from the likes of Russell Brand, Lenny Henry and Rob Brydon and the partnership will also make Harry Enfield’s upcoming sketch show available online.

Mark Thompson, Director General at the BBC, described the deal as a "ground-breaking partnership" even though US networks Fox and NBC already have similar agreements.

The move is part of a wider project to coax people to the BBC website to watch and download programmes in full via its iPlayer service, set to be launched later this year. But partnering with YouTube has fuelled critics’ fears about the commercialisation of the BBC as it cashes in on a share of the site’s advertising profits.

How’s that for a public service?
