Brits presenter escapes watchdog penalty
Russell Brand has been cleared of infringing the Ofcom code for his drug-based jokes about Robbie Williams and Conservative Leader David Cameron at this year’s Brit Awards in February.
The broadcast regulatory body received more than 260 complaints about comedian’s antics which also made fun of the war in Iraq.
Ofcom justified their decision saying that, "A certain amount of controversy was likely to be expected by the audience."
ITV successfully argued that Brand was not glamorising or encouraging drug use in any way despite asking the audience: "Who among us didn’t smoke just a little bit of weed at school, just to take the edge off those irksome crack come-downs?"
So Brand survives, which is lucky given that he is about to front his own comedy series on Channel 4. Who will be next in the firing line?
