British not shy in forming largest ever coconut orchestra
Monty Python fans across the pond were left reeling yesterday as St George’s Day celebrations saw their world record for the largest coconut orchestra obliterated in Trafalgar Square.
Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, original stars of Monty Python, led 5,567 people, including members of the current cast of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail rip-off musical Spamalot, in clip-clopping along to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
The Yanks originally set the record to the signature tune of the 1979 Monty Python film, Life of Brian in New York in March 2002, when a comparatively poultry 1,789 people were up to the task.
Craig Glenday, the editor of Guinness World Records, was on hand yesterday to verify the record attempt which involved ordering thousands of coconut shells, each labelled ‘left’ and ‘right’.
Spamalot Musical Director, Michael England, led the Guinness World Record coconut-bashing effort before announcing, "It’s a technique originated by Britons, so it’s only right that we hold the record."
What a relief. Now we just need to win the football and the cricket back.
