Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais will wrap up cameo-packed Extras in a ratings-busting finale, it was announced today
Following the precedent set by the The Office, Gervais and Merchant have resisted pressure to cash in on their prime-time staple with a third series.
Fans of jobbing thesp Andy Millman and incompetent agent Darren Lamb will have to wait for further details. Gervais’ spokesman could only confirm that "they will, at some point, sit down together and write it".
Both shows have been heaped with accolades, with Merchant beating Gervais to the best actor prize at the British Comedy Awards last year. The show also took Switzerland's Rose d'Or for best sitcom.
We can expect Extras to go out in a blaze of publicity, but former philosophy student Gervais has downplayed it ahead of time. "The special sounds a lot more postmodern than it is," he pontificates.
