Comedy journalist is off to write comedy with his wife
Malcolm Hay is quitting Time Out after 20 years at the helm of the magazines' comedy section.
Plans to hold a special benefit gig in honour of his contribution to live comedy are underway. The event will take place on July 17 at the Hackney Empire.
Although the line-up is yet to be announced, organisers have said that the night will include seven or eight acts that have benefited from Hay's coverage over the years.
Hay joined Time Out in 1986 on the back of writing theatre reviews for newspapers and a stint as a lecturer in theatre and film studies.
Time Out's comedy section is five times the size it was when Hay started. His work on the listings magazine is credited with aiding the continued popularity of comedy and the growth of the live scene by featuring up and coming acts.
But, the writer won't be quitting comedy altogether. His next unlikely career move will be a comedy writing partnership with his wife, Toni Arthur-Hay who is a folk singing, former playschool presenter turned drama director.
Good luck, sir.
