Jokes about concentration camps and suicide bombings take Jerusalem by storm
The first stand-up show to feature comedians from both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli divide concluded its tour in Jerusalem last week.
Israeli-American comedian Charley Warady teamed up with Ray Hanania, a Palestinian-American columnist, to poke fun at life and politics in the Middle-East. The act has sold out at Tel Aviv’s Tzavta Theater.
Joined by Jewish converts Aaron Freedman and Yisrael Campbell, the troupe targets everything from concentration camps to suicide bombings.
The set involves sideswipes at Israeli President Moshe Katsav and musings on the abilities of the country’s drivers. Speaking out after the tour, Hanani said: "I was determined to break the ridiculous and stupid taboo that prevents Palestinians from performing in Israel with Israelis. People believe that when Palestinians and Israelis come together, all we do is fight. The Israeli-Palestinian Comedy Tour proved that to be wrong."
