Phoenix writes: literary acclaim for Bolton's favourite son?
Peter Kay's memoirs of a 'salt of the earth' northern childhood, The Sound Of Laughter, have been nominated for Borders Book of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards.
Kay will be duking it out with God-doubting boffin Richard Dawkins and Victoria 'wife of Ian' Hislop amongst others.
Judges fell for Kay's everyman charm, comparing his appeal to Alan Bennett and Ronnie Barker as an 'old style' comic. Kay's book was also nominated for Amazon.co.uk Biography of the Year while Ricky Gervais' Flanimals in the Deep made the list for WH Smith's Children's Book of the Year at the sponsorship-heavy awards.
Those that want to see if Kay and Gervais will triumph will have to wait until 30 March when the ceremony is broadcast on Channel 4.
