History in Reverse set to make Newman the next Mark Thomas
Comedy Goth turned comic activist Robert Newman is set for a long-awaited return to our screens this autumn with a new show on BBC4.
The Beeb’s most earnest channel has commissioned a programme based on Newman’s live show, History in Reverse, and will start recording this summer.
Newman has grown up in the last decade and a half. Gone are the studenty, rock’n’roll-saturated sketches of The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Instead we have topical, grown-up and edgy polemic – not unlike a certain Mark Thomas, in fact.
History in Reverse covers all the greats: the environment, the world’s over-reliance on oil and the end of Iranian democracy. It’s not hard to see why the show will be appearing on BBC4, rather than its scatologically inclined and sitcom-dominated digital sibling, BBC3.
