Franken my dear, will the voters give a damn?
Al Franken, US satirist and self-styled scourge of the American right, has announced he is throwing in the funnyman towel and is bidding for political office.
The Emmy-award winner is quitting his job as liberal host and browbeater on Air America Radio to jump on the gravy train of fundraising dinners around his home state of Minnesota. His declaration ended months of speculation that the former Saturday Night Live stand-up would seek a seat in the US Senate.
Franken is no stranger to controversy, nor is he afraid of taking pot shots at the Bush administration. Titles of his books include Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right and Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations.
But he laid out his political agenda in uncharacteristically reserved fashion, telling fans: "I know I'm going to make some mistakes. And it's going to be the hardest thing I've ever done."
