'Victorian gent' too racy for ITV audience
Russell Brand's turn as self-styled 'ringleader of a circus of mayhem' at the Brit Awards led to hundreds of complaints from shocked ITV1 viewers.
During the show, Brand asserted that given an envelope containing a snapshot of the Queen's unmentionables, every right thinking person would sneak a peak.
A spokesperson from ITV1 defended the stand-up's comments, describing Brand as "an edgy host for an edgy event": a funnier joke than any made on the night.
How times have changed. At the 1993 British Comedy Awards, Julian Clary's comment about "fisting Norman Lamont" led to a press campaign against him, (despite only provoking 12 viewer complaints). But far from being shamed for his bad taste, Brand has been given odds of 2-1 by bookies William Hill to present next year's Brits.
