"I'm not some ruthless promoter," says Jack Power
Comedy night organiser Jack Power has hit back at criticism of his new event at Islington's Cedar Room bar.
A new 'pay to play' arrangement will see comedians cough up a small fee before performing, with the audience voting for their favourite act at the end of the night. The comic who comes out on top will walk away with the cash jackpot. Power likened the process to entering the lottery.
"I'm not some ruthless promoter squeezing the comedy acts out of their money so they have the privilege to play on my stage," he said.
"Comedians have the chance of winning £150 to £180 on the night - that's more than some guys get for three or four gigs."
Power says he is offering an alternative to the daily grind of gigging for pittance, but many comedians will see the fee as yet another hurdle to leap over in a scene that is already tough to conquer.
