He describes himself as Britain’s top comedian and, with the Golden Globes, Bafta awards and a plethora of hit series to his name Ricky Gervais can safely say he lives up to that title.

Gervais has worked extensively with his co-writer Stephen Merchant on most of his major TV shows such as The Office, Extras, Life’s Too Short and producer behind Karl Pilkington’s An Idiot Abroad.

Born in 1961, Gervais originally studied Biology at University College London before swapping to philosophy while his early forays into the creative field were with his band Seona Dancing, which was signed to a London record label.

However Gervais really got his break though radio where he met his future writing partner Stephen merchant after interviewing him for a job at Xfm.

Gervais made his TV debut in Channel 4’s Comedy Lab in 1998, and the first series of The Office aired in July and August 2001, from there we know the rest.

The Gervais trophy shelf is adorned with seven BAFTA Awards, five British Comedy Awards, two Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Gervais has also been named on the TIME list of 100 most influential people.
