Veteran comedy actor Ian Carmichael, one of the stars of early British cinema, has died at the age of 89.

Tributes have been flowing in for the actor whose career spanned more than half a century. Brian Blessed described Carmichael as "a national treasure and a consummate artist", Sir Michael Parkinson said: ‘He was a charming man and a very good comedy actor. At one time he was one of the biggest box-office stars in British movies.’

Among his many comedy exploits, Carmichael strarred in the original School For Scoundrels alongside Terry-Thomas, Alistair Sim and John Le Measurier where he played a chump who tries to better himself by joining up for a course in lifemanship.

Carmichael was best known for his portrayals of upper-class toffs however, including Bertie Wooster in a role described by P.G. Wodehouse as ‘definitive’.
