Comedy has mustered only nine nominations in this year’s Bafta nominations, with only comedy drama and US comedy Bridesmaids saving the category from being completely sidelined.
Joe Cornish is nominated for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for his work on Attack the Block, as is Black Pond.
Chris O’Dowd is up for the audience-voted rising star award after appearing in Bridesmaids, while Melissa McCarthy is nominated for best supporting actress from the film.
Bridesmaids, Irish comedy The Guard, Richard Ayoade's Submarine and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris are nominated for best original screenplay.
Comedy drama pick up three more nominations, with The Descendants, the Alexander Payne-directed comedy drama, nominated for best adapted screenplay and George Clooney getting a best actor nomination for the film. Christopher Plummer also gets a best supporting actor nomination for Beginners.
Out of 114 nominations across all categories, that means that comedy and comedy drama have picked up just 11 nominations – under ten per cent of the total.
The awards will be presented by Stephen Fry on Sunday 12 February on BBC One.
