John Cleese has found a novel way of beating the flight cancellations and travel caused by the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajoekull volcano: hailing a taxi across Europe.

The Monty Python star was stuck in Oslo after the ash cloud from the eruption closed airspace in both the UK and other European countries. After finding out that all ferries and trains were booked up Cleese was sent all the way from Norway to Belgium on a £3,300 fare so that he could get the Eurostar back to the UK.

Of the journey Cleese said: "We checked every option but there were no boats and no train tickets available. That's when my fabulous assistant determined the easiest thing would be to take a taxi."

Cleese was in Oslo to take part in the popular talk show Skavlan joked about the trip while on air, saying: "It will be interesting. I'm not in a hurry."
